Hurricane Agatha Relief 2022

On May 30, 2022, Hurricane Agatha struck the coastal and southern mountain regions of Oaxaca state, leaving a devastating impact on hundreds of rural and semi-urban communities. The aftermath of the hurricane resulted in widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure, along with severe shortages of food, drinking water, medications, and reconstruction materials.

However, amidst the challenging circumstances, solidarity emerged. Dr. Widmann and Denise Matadamas from Conecta Puerto collaborated with several civil associations to provide aid to those in need. Over 25 tons of food were delivered to more than 2,000 families, with a particular focus on the most remote and heavily affected communities. Most of the food was donated by World Central Kitchen and the Punta Ecóliga Zicatela. Additionally, donations of essential items such as baby food, formula, soap, toilet paper, and diapers were requested and received from Nestle and Kimberly Clark.

Furthermore, Dr. Widmann actively participated in various medical missions aimed at providing healthcare assistance to vulnerable children in the affected areas. By joining these missions, she extended her support beyond immediate relief efforts, addressing the specific healthcare needs of the young ones who were most impacted by the disaster.

The relief efforts extended over a period of two months, thanks to the dedicated assistance of numerous volunteers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Their collective commitment ensured a continuous provision of support to the most affected communities, helping them cope with the aftermath of the hurricane and rebuild their lives.
