Mercadito La Milpa

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Agatha in Oaxaca, a collaborative project was initiated to provide support to the affected communities. Denise Matadamas from Conecta Puerto, Dr. Widmann, and several civil associations joined forces to deliver aid to over 2,000 vulnerable households in remote and heavily impacted areas.

Recognizing the long-term impact of the disaster on the local economy, the team established a project to support local producers and artisans at the Mercado Artesanal de Mazunte who had suffered significant losses.

The hurricane caused damage to their homes, sources of income, production capacity, merchandise, and commercial channels. The project provided assistance in the form of infrastructure repair materials, replacement of production equipment, production supplies, and some marketing expenses. Additionally, solidarity loans were arranged with a minimal interest rate to help entrepreneurs maintain their activities and establish a revolving fund.

Overall, the project brought together various stakeholders, including civil associations, donors, volunteers, and the local community.

To promote economic recovery, the project facilitated the creation of the "Mercado Solidario La Milpa" in Puerto Escondido. This commercial channel served as a platform for local producers, cooks, and artisans to showcase and sell their products. Monthly markets were organized to generate income and revitalize the local economy by attracting visitors and promoting cultural heritage.

Throughout the project, efforts were made to strengthen the commercial proposals and entrepreneurial skills of the beneficiaries. Training and guidance were provided to enhance their knowledge, marketing strategies, and overall business acumen. The project aimed to provide comprehensive support, combining immediate relief, economic empowerment, and sustainable development to help the affected market in Mazunte strengthen their selling power.
